Don’t Put an “I” in Team

Let’s face it, at one time or another you have experienced the joy and wonder of working in a team environment. (Hopefully, you picked up on the sarcasm here…I’m laying it on pretty thick!) Don’t get me wrong, working in a team can be great when members are aligned and working together to accomplish the task before them. But, there are also those times when working with a team can feel like you’ve been sentenced to a life in prison with no chance of parole. Here are our 6 keys to building a winning team that every business owner should know.

  1. Strong Leadership – it’s been said that a fish stinks from the head down which stands to reason. If you are “bad” leader then you can’t expect your team to be much better. In the words of our founder, Brad Sugars, “You get the employees you deserve.” Only when you improve your skills as a leader do you attract the team members you deserve.
  2. Common Goal – Setting clear common goals and breaking those goals down in to “bite sized” action steps helps eliminate uncertainty and build momentum. Clarity is power!
  3. Rules of the Game – Set clear expectations for all team members from their job description down to their key performance indicators, or KPIs. Then be sure to review those expectations periodically with your team members to ensure they’re on the right track.
  4. Action Plan – Review the progress the team is making and update your action plan every 90 days. This will allow you to celebrate the wins achieved and tweak the strategies that need to be improved upon to take the business to the next level.
  5. Support Risk Taking – Don’t stifle your team’s creativity. Allow them to take risks; they just might surprise you with their ideas. Delegation is not abdication. Be involved, but let go of the “if you want it done right, do it yourself” attitude. Allow your team members to grow into the leaders you know they can be.
  6. 100% Involvement / Inclusion – Keep your team members up-to-speed on what’s going on. Being transparent and asking for input will help build a cohesive team. Team members who do not feel like they’re part of the team will continue to withdraw and you could wind up losing a special team member because they did not feel needed.
