Many of us have been thrust into a new work environment – our homes.  I have worked remotely and managed remote employees for some time.  Here are some tips I have used that will help to make your experience go smoothly:

  1. Keep to your normal schedule.  This includes sleep, meals, exercise, and work hours.
  2. Get dressed and groomed.  Resist the urge to stay in PJ’s all day.  Putting yourself into a professional mindset will boost your productivity.
  3. Create a dedicated work space, preferably somewhere that will remain undisturbed.  Use that same space every day.
  4. Set your To Do list for each day at the end of the previous day.  Knowing what you need to focus on will help to keep you on track.
  5. Eat healthy meals and snacks, drink plenty of water.
  6. Schedule time to check-in with your team.
  7. Limit distractions. If your house is too quiet, put on some soft music.  Resist the urge to turn on the TV.  If your house has too much noise, use headphones to tune out the noise.

The work that you are doing is important to your team and to your customers.  Working from home may not be ideal for everyone, but it is manageable. Stay flexible, stay in touch with your peers, stay on schedule, and embrace your new office.
