Each year as we approach the celebration of Independence Day here in the United States, I set aside time to read the Declaration of Independence and reflect on what this document means to me. The impact of this document and the country created by it has resonated around the world for the past 243 years, giving those seeking opportunity a place to achieve greatness. For those of you who were brave enough to take a chance on your dream of starting a business, and who now reap the rewards that came with taking that risk, congratulations! My hope is that your business is providing you with the following: Life, Liberty, and Happiness. How would you rank yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 in each of those areas? If the answer isn’t 10 for each then maybe it’s time to take a step back and consider what a business coach can do to help you boost your score.
Life
Is your business currently providing you with your best life? If you’re living to work instead of working to live, then you may need to re-evaluate your priorities. Your business should be there to create more life for you, not more work. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with working hard and enjoying the fruits of your labor. But if you’re chained to your desk, living weekend to weekend, or worse, taking a vacation every couple of years to escape the hamster wheel, then something has to change. Most people die at age 25 and are buried at 80 (if you’re fortunate to make it that long), making just enough to get by on. Life becomes comfortable and they never truly experience their full potential. Are you someone making plans to improve each year, or did you take one year and photocopy it over and over again? Working with a business coach can re-ignite the passion you had when you started out, helping clarify your vision and what legacy you want to leave behind.
Liberty
Does your business provide you the flexibility and freedom you desire? Most individuals that start a business do so for one of two reasons. One, they get let go and need to do something to earn a living. They say to themselves, “Self…we’re pretty good at doing x,y,z. Let’s start a business.” Or two, they get tired of working for the person in charge and feel they can do a better job delivering the product or service, so they strike out on their own. In either instance, what typically happens next is the person gets caught up in the day to day operations, and instead of creating a business, they create a job for themselves. And we all know that J-O-B stands for: Just Over Broke. If your business is not providing the freedom and flexibility you thought it would, it’s time to raise your hand and have a conversation with an expert.
Happiness
Are you happy with where your business is currently? If the answer is, “No!” then it’s time to take action. Life is way too short to settle for less then you expect. I’ve personally never met a person who said, “You know what? I’m pretty comfortable with being unhappy.” Granted, happiness is not guaranteed in anything we do, but it is a decision one can make at any time. If you’re not happy with the results you’ve been seeing in your business, it’s time to stop doing what you’ve been doing and try something different. Make the decision to take the first steps towards changing your current situation and educate yourself on the benefits of business coaching.
As we gear up to celebrate the 243rd birthday of the United States of America, set aside time to draft your “Declaration of Independence” from whatever is holding you back. It could be your current business results or a mindset that needs to be left behind. There is an abundance of opportunity out there for everyone…don’t miss your chance to grab it and create the life, have the liberty, and experience the happiness you deserve.
