Wrapping Up Your Year

As we approach the final days of 2019, many of us are “wrapping” up our year.  This happens in many ways, including our financials, bank statements, tax planning, sales results, and team meetings.  It’s also a great time to look back and capture what you have learned over the year. Take a look back at 3 things to wrap up your year:

1.      Wins – What were your biggest wins/successes this past year?  How did they happen?  Where did the client come from?  What did you do differently on this project?  If you are like most businesses, you don’t take enough time to celebrate your wins, which means you probably don’t take the time to assess and learn, and most importantly APPLY what you learned. This is the perfect time to change that.

 2.      Challenges – What challenges did you and your team need to rise above and overcome this year?  What caused them? Were they predictable or avoidable?  What did you put in place to prevent them (and their friends) from returning?  How will you know if they return?  What did you learn from the challenges, and most importantly, how are you APPLYING the learning?

 3.      Learnings – Learnings come from Wins and Challenges as discussed above, but they also come from simply paying attention.  By this I mean paying attention to your team, as they see things from a different perspective than you do (sometimes better, sometimes not so much), but their perspectives are always valuable.  You can also learn from your clients and “not clients”, those prospects you didn’t convince that your products/services were not the solution to their problem.  And lastly, what did you learn from reading, from conferences, workshops, and intentional efforts to educate yourself?  And of course, how are you APPLYING the learning? Write it down and do it.

I ask my clients to do this exercise at least every 90 days, some more frequently.  If we all did this, and actually took at least one new and improved action, just think how much better we would be today than we were at the end of last year.
